A HomeKit version of the popular G2 Gateway camera from Aqara boasting HSV out of the box is due to hit shelves at the end of the month with pre-orders live now.
If you’ve been following the HomeKit news cycle in the last six months, you will have undoubtedly stumbled upon news of one of Aqara’s recent product releases and with pre-orders for the G2H gateway in progress, the Chinese smart home manufacturer is showing no signs of slowing.
As reported by HomeKit News, the G2H is largely unchanged from the standard G2 model with a couple of internal upgrades and one SIGNIFICANT exception, support for HomeKit compatibility AND HomeKit Secure Video.
While HSV is pretty big news, the camera itself is a solid competitor in the HomeKit environment, with specs including:
- 1080p streaming and recording resolution
- 140° field of view
- infrared for motion and night vision
- two-way audio
- up to 32 GB micro-SD local storage
- 4 color options – white, blue, yellow, orange
- Zigbee 3.0 hub
If you’re unfamiliar with Aqara’s connected home ecosystem, it connects to your network over WiFi with a hub or gateway, which then allows you to connect different accessories likes sensors, switches, and plugs using the Zigbee wireless protocol. In addition to a security camera, the G2H is also an Aqara hub allowing you to string up to 32 accessories in turn exposing them to HomeKit. The G2H uses Zigbee 3.0 which will be compatible with the faster and more efficient accessories that Aqara is bringing to market.
Finally, the G2H is supposedly bringing a couple of unique features if you use the Aqara Home app. The first of which is the ability to automate the camera’s power mode based on different times which is great for privacy. The second notable feature is the ability for the camera’s microphone to listen for “abnormal” sound. Which it’s unclear at this point if or how this can be triggered, but it’s a potentially added security feature when away from home.
As we mentioned above, pre-orders have already begun for the Aqara G2H Smart Cammera Gateway with units expecting to ship starting July 30.
